What goes into a good plank floor

  1. Old floor out

    Carpet, sheet vinyl or worn laminate comes up first, along with tack strip and staples.

  2. Flatten the deck

    Floating floors show every dip. High seams get sanded and low spots get filled before the first plank.

  3. Underlayment

    The right pad for the product, for sound and for moisture where the room needs it.

  4. Clean cuts

    Door jambs undercut, tight edges along cabinets and tubs, and expansion space hidden under trim.

  5. Transitions and trim

    Transitions at every doorway and quarter round along the base so the edges look finished.

LVP and laminate questions

Is vinyl plank waterproof?

Most rigid-core vinyl plank is rated waterproof for the plank itself, which is why it suits kitchens and baths. Water can still get under a floor at the edges, so a big leak needs attention fast.

Laminate or vinyl for a kitchen?

Vinyl plank is the safer pick anywhere water hits the floor. Laminate is a great choice for dry living spaces and bedrooms, and it feels more like wood underfoot.

Can it go over my existing floor?

Sometimes. Flat, solid tile or sheet vinyl can stay under some plank floors. Carpet always comes out. Jonathan will tell you which applies at the estimate.
