Most tired hardwood can be saved.

If your hardwood is gray in the traffic lanes, scratched up by the dog, or stuck with a dated orange finish, it probably does not need replacing. A full sand takes it back to bare wood, and fresh stain and finish make it look close to the day it was laid.

We run a drum sander across the field of the floor and work the edges along every wall, then fill, stain and coat. Kitchens, dining rooms, whole main floors and stair treads all qualify. Before quoting, Jonathan checks how much wood is left to sand.

What the job includes

  1. Repairs first

    Pet-stained, cracked or water-damaged boards can be cut out and replaced with matching wood before the sand.

  2. Full sand

    The old finish, old stain and surface scratches come off across the whole floor, down to clean wood.

  3. Fill

    Nail holes and small gaps get filled so they disappear under the finish.

  4. Stain or natural

    Natural oak, a warm brown or a deep dark stain. Colors can be tried on a patch of your own floor first.

  5. Finish coats

    Coats of finish go down in the sheen you choose, with a light buff between them.

Sanding and refinishing questions

How do I know my floor can be refinished?

Lift a floor vent and look at the edge of a board. If there is a good layer of wood above the tongue, it can be sanded. Try the vent test on our home page, or let Jonathan look at it during the estimate.

Can I change the color?

Yes. Sanding to bare wood means you can go lighter, darker or natural. Red oak and white oak take stain differently, so it pays to sample on your own boards before the whole room gets it.

Can engineered hardwood be refinished?

Often, if the top layer is thick enough. A thin veneer may only take one light sand or a fresh topcoat, so it gets checked before anyone plugs in a sander.
